What is PAS?

Community Alternatives Unlimited (CAU) is a designated Pre-Admission Screening (PAS) agency. PAS stands for Pre-Admission Screening and the purpose of the process is to determine eligibility for state services funded through the Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD).

CAU collaborates with individuals (and their families) to assist and guide them through collecting historical and relevant information to document the diagnosis of an intellectual and developmental disability, conduct relevant assessments and evaluations, and update the status of state and federal entitlements and guardianship status.

As an Independent Service Coordination Provider, CAU’s Role is to:

  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws
  • Arrange for and conduct assessments
  • Determine the specific service needs for individuals based on an interpretation of these assessments and evaluations
  • Screen for guardianship needs and, if necessary, refer the individual who may have guardianship needs to the local Office of State Guardian (OSG).
  • Make necessary determinations regarding eligibility for services, completing all documentation required to support the ISC agency’s determinations.
  • Educate individuals and families, presenting all options and facilitating the service selection process.
  • Link individuals to needed support services in accordance with the requirements of Federal and State criteria.
  • Coordinate PAS activities with other screening entities within the state, including those representing the Division of Mental Health, the Division of Rehabilitation Services, the Department on Aging, and other entities designated as screeners according to rules and regulations of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.
  • Supply necessary information to the existing or potential service provider.

The PAS process is free and available to anyone for whom there is a reasonable basis to believe there is a presence of an intellectual and developmental disability, regardless of age. Individuals (and their families) can meet with one of our Individual Service Coordinators at CAU to discuss eligibility for resources as part of the PAS process.

CAU interfaces with various state agencies and a wide variety of organizations and vendors to better serve our families and individuals.
